A Family Dream That Turned Into a Holiday Home You’ll Love
Sometimes, the best stories begin with a daydream.
Our journey to creating Barefoot Dreams started just like that—on a road trip filled with laughter, shared memories, and the magic of the Eastern Cape coastline. I’ve been coming to Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay since I was a child—my mother was born in Humansdorp, and our family holidays always brought us back to these shores. The salty air, the familiar roads, the warmth of the community—it’s always felt like home.
Years later, not much had changed… except now I was sharing those same roads and waves with my partner AJ, his sister Nolene, and her husband Matau. On one of our trips together, as we drove down to J-Bay, we started dreaming—half seriously, half playfully—about owning a place here. We imagined what it would look like, how we’d decorate it, and how amazing it would be to have a spot of our own so close to the sea.
Later that same day, barefoot and sun-kissed from a stroll around the neighbourhood, that dream took an unexpected turn: my uncle, who lives in Jeffreys Bay, told us he was selling his house. That very evening, we made an offer—and just like that, a casual daydream became something real and lasting.
From the start, we agreed that Barefoot Dreams should be more than just a place to sleep. We’ve all had disappointing holiday stays, and we didn’t want our guests to feel the same way. So we began preparing this home exactly as we would want it for ourselves—comfortable, clean, relaxed, filled with everything you’d need to truly unwind.
Every piece of furniture, every feature—down to the covered braai area and the secure garden for pets—has been thought through with care. We’re still making improvements as we go, but one thing has never changed: our mission is to create a space where anyone can feel at home, at peace, and completely free to dream.
